PURPOSE: To provide a secured braking effect for the ship in an emergency by a method wherein a brake plate is stored along the outer plate of a stern in normal condition and can be submerged in water smoothly when it is required.
CONSTITUTION: A metallic support for brake plate 4 is pivotably fitted to eye plates 2 through a supporting shaft 3, the eye plates 2 being fixed to the rear end of the stern hull 1. The upper edge part of the brake plate 6 is pivotably fitted to the tip end part of the support 4 through a supporting shaft 5. The support 4 can be stored along the rear end of the ship's stern by a wire 8 wound by a winder 10. In an emergency, a stopper 12 for the winder 10 is released to deliver the wire 8 from the winder 10, so that the brake plate 6 generates a secured braking effect.
