To provide a braking device for a horizontally sliding gate door capable of avoiding a braking delay caused by wrong operation or the like and positively braking when a moving speed in closing the gate door reaches a predetermined speed or more regardless of a wheel slip or the like.
The braking device for the horizontally sliding gate door comprises a reel 5 supported rotatably around a brake drum 3; a reel driving member 7 wound around the reel 5 and pulled out of or rewound around the reel 5 to normally and reversely rotate the reel 5; and brake shoes 11 expansibly supported to the reel 5 and brought into contact with the inner peripheral surface of the brake drum 3 when the rotating speed of the reel 5 exceeds a predetermined value to generate braking force. Either one of the brake drum 3 and the tip of the reel driving member pulled out of the reel 5, is fixed to the horizontally sliding gate door 2, and the other is fixed to an anchor 14 near the fully open position C of the horizontally sliding gate door 2.
