PURPOSE: To control a character generator provided in a receiver from the side of a coder.

CONSTITUTION: The character generator 56 is provided in a television receiver 2 and when a CCD broadcast is received by a tuner 50, display characters corresponding to received character information (CCD information) are generated and displayed at a CRT 52. Also, video signals de-scrambled by the de- scrambling circuit 12 of a decoder 1 for decoding the program of a cable television are outputted and displayed through an encoder 81 and a video processor 51 at the CRT 52. When a prescribed control signal is generated by a controller 15, the control signal is converted to a CCD format by the encoder 81 and superimposed on the output of the de-scrambling circuit 12. The control signal is decoded by a CCD decoder 54 and inputted to the controller 55. The controller 55 lets the prescribed display characters generated by the character generator 56 corresponding to the control signal and lets them outputted and displayed through the video processor 51 at the CRT 52.
