A guide 12 for a carbon brush 6 is constituted of the carbon case 4 of a brush holder 2 and the carbon case 4 is provided with a spring means in order to apply a stress by the contact spring force KF to the carbon brush 6 along the guide 12 while simultaneously pressing the tapered portion of the guide 12 with a supporting spring force SF. The contact spring force KF is generated by providing a contact spring 8 as a spring means, and the supporting spring force SF is generated by providing a supporting spring 28 separately. Suitably, the tapered portion is constituted of the guide face 16 of a first guide side face 14 of the guide 12, and a second guide side face 22 contiguous to the first guide side face 14 and an acute angle w is formed by the guide face 16 and the second guide side face 22.
