To control a brushless DC motor in a circuit configuration requiring low cost and causing less loss.
The brushless DC motor includes a first arm 2, a second arm 3, a third arm 4, and a fourth arm 5, each arm having diodes inversely parallel to switching elements that are connected vertically in series. The first arm 2 to the fourth arm 5 are connected in parallel respectively to a smoothing capacitor 6. A single-phase AC power supply 7 is connected to a series contact point of the diodes of the first arm 2 and to that of the diodes of the second arm 3 via a reactor 8 so that the first arm 2 and second arm 3 are driven as an AC-DC converting circuit. Either the first arm 2 or the second arm 3 is connected to one phase of a brushless DC motor 9. A series contact point of the diodes of the third arm 4 and that of the diodes of the fourth arm 5 are connected respectively to different phases of the brushless DC motor 9 to drive the third arm 4 and fourth arm 5.
