To obtain the subject new compound, comprising a calixarene compound having a cross-linked structure and useful as an Na ion selective coloring matter, having high sensitivity to Na ions and hardly affected with Li ions or the like for a light transmitting type ion sensor or the like.

This new calixarene compound is represented by formula I {R is a 1-22C (substituted)hydrocarbon; Z is a color developing organic group represented by formula II [Y is an electron attractive group; (n) is an integer of 0-3] or the like} and is useful as a sodium ion selective coloring matter, having high sensitivity to sodium ions and hardly affected with other ions such as lithium ions for an ion sensitive membrane or the like such as a light transmitting type ion sensor or a light waveguide type ion sensor. The compound is obtained by reacting and cyclizing a tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene compound represented by formula III with a polyether represented by formula IV (X is a halogen or the like) in the presence of a base in a solvent, then alkylating one of the OH groups, subsequently oxidizing the resultant compound and further reacting the oxidized compound with a color developing organic group introducing agent.
