PURPOSE: To obtain a camera capable of imprinting an accurate reference scale by constituting the camera in the state where controlling means inhibits photographing operation in accordance with object distance.

CONSTITUTION: A range-finding device 4 performs range-finding at plural focusing areas set inside a photographic picture, and detects the object distance. The device 4 selects the unit of the reference scale in accordance with the focal distance of a photographing lens based on a range-finding value. Required data are previously stored in the memory of a controlling circuit 50, the unit is decided by retrieving the data for every photographing, magnification is found based on the range-finding value and the focal distance of the photographing lens, the length of the scale fitted to the unit is calculated, the number of imprinting pulses is arithmetically calculated based on a moved and generated pulse per the specified moving amount of a film, and an LED 9a is turned on synchronously with a pulse generated from an encoder provided on a free sprocket, so that the length of the reference scale can be automatically imprinted. The photographing operation is not performed in accordance with the object distance, and the photographing is not performed in the case the reference scale can not be accurately imprinted.
