To provide a capillary fluid switch which is capable of generating a relatively large force, and achieving rapid and stable optical switching.
A barrier area including a resistor 316 is provided at the intersection of first, second and third optical paths 340, 346, 342, and a drain area is provided in a communicating manner therewith. The barrier area and the drain area are filled with the fluid, and bubbles 402 are maintained in the barrier area. When the bubbles 402 are located in the barrier area, the light incident from the first optical path 340 is totally reflected at the interface of the bubbles 402, and guided to the third optical path 342. When further heating is achieved by the resistor 316, the bubbles 402 are moved to the drain area. When the bubbles 402 are discharged from the barrier area, the light incident from the first optical path 340 is passed through the barrier area, and passed through the second optical path 346.
