NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1a is single bond, 1-6C alkylene or 2-6C alkenylene; R2a is halogen, OH, nitro, amino, 1-4C alkyl, carbon ring or heterocyclic group; R1a and R2a may together form 1-12C alkyl, etc; R3a is H, 1-6C alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, etc; Xa is single bond or imino; etc.) or its acid addition salt.
EXAMPLE: 4-(4-Nitrophenyl)semicarbazide hydrochloride.
USE: A Maillard reaction inhibitor. It is useful as a remedy and preventive for various complications of diabetes, e.g., coronary cardiopathy, peripheral circulation disorder, cerebrovascular disorder, diabetic neurosis, arteriosclerosis, cataract and retinopathy.
PREPARATION: The objective compound of formula I can be produced by reacting an isocyanate compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in a solvent such as diethyl ether at 0-40°C.
