To provide a carbon fiber having an aspect ratio larger than that of a conventional carbon fiber by a vapor phase method, having excellent dispersibility and capable of imparting electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity with a smaller added amount when added to a resin or the like; and to provide a method for producing the carbon fiber.
Not less than 65% (measured on number basis) of the carbon fiber by the vapor phase method has 80-500 nm average fiber diameter, 100-200 aspect ratio and fiber diameters within ±20% of average fiber diameter, and preferably, the bulk density is about ≤0.02 g/cm2. The method for producing the carbon fiber by the vapor phase method by thermally decomposing a carbon source at 800-1,300°C in the presence of a transition metal compound which is a catalyst is regulated so that the vapor pressure of the transition metal compound at 150°C is ≥0.13 kPa (1 mmHg) and the carbon source and the transition metal compound in a vaporized state are jetted to the inner wall of a reactor to react them.
