To provide a novel catalyst composition for hydrating an olefin into the corresponding alcohol which is composed of a heteropolyacid supported on niobia.
A catalyst is composed of a heteropolyacid supported on niobia. The niobia carrier has an average surface area of at least 100 m2/g, preferably at least 150 m2/g. The niobia must have average crushing strength of at least 2 kg, preferably at least 5 kg, or more preferably at least 7 kg. The bulk density of the carrier is at least 380 g/liter, preferably at least 440 g/liter. The niobia has an average particle size of 2-10 mm, preferably 4-6 mm and an average pore volume of 0.1-1.2 ml/g, preferably 0.3-1.0 ml/g. Moreover, the average pore radius of the niobia carrier is 10-1000 angstrom, preferably 30-500 angstrom.
