PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst for photodecomposition of water assuring a high rate of decomposition by containing Nb and Ru in TiO2.
CONSTITUTION: This catalyst consists of doped TiO2 particles having RuO2 on their surfaces. In order to prepare this catalyst, a soluble Nb pentavalent compound, for example, Nb2O5, is added at a desired amount to a solution of, for example TiOSO4 and FeSO4. Following this, this soln. is heated to about 90°CWb.p. of the soln., after which it is diluted with water. During this time, the temp. is kept constant until the complete hydrolysis is achieved. Next, an Nb-contg. metatitanic acid slurry is filtered and washed. Thence, a soln. of a soluble salt of Ru, for example, Ruγl3, is added at a desired amount to the filtered mass, and the resultant product is dried and is heated at about 80W120°C in the atmosphere, whereby the product is obtained. The amounts of Nb and Ru are both about 0.001W10wt% in terms of Nb2O5 and RuO2 respectively based on the weight of TiO2.
