PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst having excellent activity, methacrylic acid selectivity, and stability by synthesizing a catalyst precursor containing a heteropoly-acid salts by mixing a uniform solution of a heteropoly-acid, an aqueous solution and an aqueous ammonia, and drying the precursor.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst having a composition with the formula; MoaVbPcSdCueXfYg(NH4)h-Oi (wherein X stands for at least one element selected from Sb, Co, Bi, and a group of other elements, Y for at least one element selected from K, Rb, Cs, and a group of other elements, a-h express atomic ratio of repective elements and in the case of a is 12; b=0.1-2, c=1-3, d=0.01-0.6, e=0.01-0.5, f=0-3, g=0.1-3, h=0.01-6, and i stands for the number of oxygen atoms necessary to satisfy the atomic valence of each component); is produced. To produce the catalyst for production of methacrylic acid, a catalyst precursor containing a heteropoly-acid salt is synthesized and dried.
