To provide a new catalyst which is used for polymerizing cyclic olefin, has a sufficient catalyst activity, and can produce a cyclic olefin (co)polymer in a high yield, and to provide a method for polymerizing the cyclic olefin in the presence of the catalyst.
This catalyst for polymerizing a cyclic olefin is characterized by containing an organic metal compound represented by formula (I) (M is a transition metal atom in the group 8; R1 to R14 are each identically or differently H, a halogen, hydroxy, carboxy, cyano, nitro, sulfa, mercapto, an alkoxy, an alkylthio, an aryloxy, an arylthio, an ester, a thioester, a heteroaryl, a silyl, a siloxy, a linear hydrocarbon, or a cyclic hydrocarbon group). The method for producing the cyclic olefin uses the catalyst for polymerizing the cyclic olefin.
