To provide a catalytic hydrogenation reduction method which enables performing a catalytic hydrogenation reduction reaction with a high conversion ratio.SOLUTION: Provided is a catalytic hydrogenation reduction method which causes a reaction substrate and a hydrogen source to contact each other in the presence of a platinum group metal-carrying catalyst to perform catalytic hydrogenation reduction of the reaction substrate, and in which: the platinum group metal-carrying catalyst comprises an ion exchanger carrying at least one of platinum group metal ions, platinum group metal complex ions, and platinum group metal nano particles with an average particle diameter being in a range of 1 to 100 nm; the ion exchanger is a non-particulate weakly basic organic porous ion exchanger comprising a continuous skeleton phase and a continuous pore phase, with a thickness of the continuous skeleton phase in a range of 1-100 μm, an average diameter of the continuous pore phase in a range of 1-1000 μm, a total pore volume in a range of 0.5-50 mL/g, an ion exchange capacity per weight in a dry state in a range of 1-9 mg equivalent/g, and ion exchange groups distributed in the ion exchange body.SELECTED DRAWING: None
