Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a process for alkylating an alkali metal with an alkyl halide containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali metal selected from lithium, sodium and potassium is reacted in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of the a catalytic compound of the formula (RR1R2Ma)yA(R3)x (R, R1 and R2 are each selected from H, halogen, 1-13C alkyl and alkenyl groups 3-10C cycloalkyl group and 6-18C aryl group; R3 is selected from 1-10C alkyl group and 2-5C alkylene group; Ma is selected from silicon, carbon, germanium and tin; (x) and (y) are each independently 0 to 3).
