Title:
CATHODE COLLECTOR STRUCTURES FOR MOLTEN CARBONATE FUEL CELLS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2023116504
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
To provide: molten carbonate fuel cells with cathode collector structures that allow improved operation of a molten carbonate fuel cell when operated under conditions of an elevated CO2 utilization rate; and methods of generating electricity in the cells.SOLUTION: A molten carbonate fuel cell comprises an anode 330, a cathode 350, and an electrolyte matrix 340 comprising an electrolyte between the anode and the cathode, where an open area ratio is 45% or more of the total surface area of the cathode surface and corresponds to a portion of the cathode surface that is not in contact with a cathode collector 360. In the molten carbonate fuel cell, an open mesh screen with an average cell width and/or length of 1.0 mm or less is located between the cathode surface and the cathode collector. A fuel stream with a CO2 content of at least 1 vol.% is supplied to the anode. Operation of the molten carbonate fuel cell generates a cathode exhaust containing 2.0 vol.% or less of CO2.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
