Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydroxyalkylcellulose useful as an ingredient of a hair care preparation, highly compatible with a surfactant, which cellulose has a specified structure and has a mobility distribution in a specified range when determined by electrophoresis.
SOLUTION: This hydroxyalkylcellulose is represented by formula I [wherein R1 to R3 are each H, a group of formula II (wherein R4 is H or methyl; a is 1-6; R5 to R7 are each a 1-16C alkyl; X is a halogen; and n is 50-2,000)] and has a mobility distribution in the range of 0.1×10-5 to 2.0×10-5 cm2/sec.V. It is desirable that the average degree of substitution with a substituent of formula II is 0.4-2.9 per glucose unit and the average number of moles of substituents is in the range of 1.0-7.0. It is desirable that average degree of substitution with a substituent of formula III is 0.1-3.0 per glucose unit, and a is 1-6 on the average. The alkylcellulose has a degree of substitution with a quaternary-nitrogen-containing group of, desirably, 0.1-1.5 and a viscosity of 30 Pa.s as measured in a 2 wt.% aqueous solution at 25°C.
