To obtain a cellulose exhibiting various strength characteristics, by subjecting a cellulose derivative as a base material to surface modification with a specific organosilane to make the cellulose approximately uniformly composite with the organosilane and to firmly adhere the organosilane to the surface of the cellulose.
This cellulose is obtained by subjecting a base material consisting of natural cellulose, regenerated cellulose or a cellulose derivative obtained from natural cellulose as a raw material to surface modification with one or more kinds of organosilane compounds of the formula: R1nSi(OR2)n(OH)4-m-n [(n) and (m) are each an integer and satisfy 0≤(n)≤1, 0≤(m)≤4 and (n)+(m) ≤4; R1 is a 1-5C hydrocarbon main chain and has one or more reactive functional groups, such as a cyclic ether residue, in its structure]. A cellulose comprising a crystalline region in an amount of 40-80% and an amorphous region in an amount of 20-60% is preferably used as the base material. It is preferable that the crystallinity after treating the surface is not so much changed as to exceed 10% when compared with that before treating the surface.
