To provide a character input device mountable on a compact electronic device such as a portable telephone for easily inputting various characters only by moving the tip of the finger to a character plotting direction.
The character input device is provided with a character input means 2 for generating an electric signal based on the movement of a tip of a finger 1 to the plotting direction of a character. The character input means 2 is provided with an information input part 2a with which the tip of the finger 1 is brought into contact and a signal conversion part 2b for converting the movement of the tip of the finger 1 into an electric signal. Furthermore, this character input device is provided with a first information processing means 4 for converting an electric signal transmitted from the signal conversion part 2b into the pattern signal of the character and a second information processing means 5 for collating the pattern signal of the character with the pattern data of the character stored in a memory 5, and for extracting the character corresponding to the movement of the tip of the finger 1 from the memory 5.
