A potable toy 1 has a character input device 10 including: a touch part array consisting of five touch parts, one disposed at a center and every other part disposed at upper and lower and right and left parts, and configured to respectively output one shot signal; a circuit configured to generate a code corresponding to the combination of two to five times of one-touch operations to be successively performed to the different touch parts on the touch part array; a storage medium 42 configured to store character data designated with codes to be generated in accordance with the combination of the one-touch operations with respect to the touch part array; and a control circuit configured to, when a set of one-touch operations with respect to the touch part array is performed by a user, read character data designated with codes to be generated in accordance with the operation from the storage medium 42.
