To provide an ozone-less non-contact charging type charging device capable of increasing the ion generated by X-ray and uniformly and sufficiently charging an electrostatic image carrier moving at high speed.
A charging device to be used for charging of an electrostatic image carrier 1 for image forming device is provided with an X-ray emitting device 2 and electric field forming means 3, 13, and it charges the electrostatic image carrier 1 by emitting the X-ray to the space above the electrostatic image carrier 1 and forming an electric field. In this device, a target material 5 is provided close to or in contact with the X-ray emitting hole 4 of the X-ray emitting device 2, and the target material 5 is brought into contact with the whole inner surface area of the X-ray emitting hole 4. According to this structure, since the emitting angle of X-ray is increased to increase the generated ion, the electrostatic image carrier to be charged at high speed can be uniformly and sufficiently charged.
