To provide a method for preparing chemical gel in a physical gel matrix (a matrix made of a material which can change from a gel state to a sol state), to provide a chemical gel prepared by the above method, and to provide a display method and a display device which use the gel, particularly a display method and a display device in which not digital gradation such as area gradation but analog gradation is made possible.
1. By the method for preparing chemical gel, a chemical gel in a desired form can be produced in a physical gel matrix 2. By the display method, an image is displayed by using a display device having a light transmitting display side substrate, a counter non-display side substrate, a liquid housed between the substrates, and a gel which expands and contracts (swells and shrinks) according to the external stimulation. The state of the gel in contact with the display substrate or not in contact with the display substrate is produced by the expansion and contraction of the gel so as to control the incident light to display. A gradation display is carried out by controlling the contact area between the gel on each pixel and the display side substrate.
