PURPOSE: To obtain a chitin molding which can function as chitosan and yet has acid resistance, by treating a chitin molding with an alkali and allowing its volume to be increased while retaining its shape in a dilute aq. soln. of acetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: A chitin molding which is an alkali-treated molding, has such a property that its volume can be increased 10 times or above while retaining its shape in a dilute aq. soln. of acetic acid. Said alkali treatment is carried out in such a manner that previously molded chitin is brought into contact with an alkaline soln. As the alkaline soln., an aq. soln. of sodium hydroxide is preferred and the optimum concn. is 30W60w/v%. The treating temp. is pref. 1W6hr at a concn. of 30W60w/v%. An example of the dilute aq. soln. of acetic acid is an aq. soln. contg. glacial acetic acid at a concn. of 0.1W50v/v%. The retension of shape means that the molding exists as a solid without being dissolved and there can be retained a shape which the molding has before the immersion thereof in said aq. soln. of acetic acid.
