PURPOSE: To prevent the deterioration of the optical transmission characteristic arising from the infiltration of hydrogen therein by incorporating a hydrogen adsorbent into a coating material of the optical fiber so as to adsorb the gaseous hydrogen generated from a silicon resin which is the coating material before said hydrogen infiltrates into the glass for the optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: The silicon resin is used for the coatig material which coats the optical fiber having a core and clad and a material which can adsorb hydrogen is incorporated into said material. Fine oxide particles consisting of at least one component among SiO2, GeO2 and P2O5 are usable as the hydrogen adsorbent material and further the hydrogen adsorbent material is dispersed into ethanol, methanol or water and is incorporated into the silicon resin. The change in the transmission loss in the heating treatment at 200°C of the coated optical fiber obtd. in such a manner is such that the increase of light absorption is slight as compared to the initial value as shown by the alternate long and short line in the figure. The deterioration of the characteristics is not admitted.
