PURPOSE: To obtain a reinforced ceramics composite material having excellent oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance by providing the surface of a base of a specific SiC fiber-reinforced ceramics composite material with a specific coated layer and specifying a state of coefficient of thermal expansion.
CONSTITUTION: A composite material comprising a base (I) of SiC fiber- reinforced ceramics composite material as a reinforcing material in a matrix comprising a carbide, a nitride or a carbonitride of group 4A or 4B of the periodic table and a coated layer (II) formed on the surface of the base and constituted in the following manner. Namely, the composition of the coated layer (II) has a slant composition continuously changing from a composition composed of a carbide of an element of group 4A or 4B or a complex phase of the carbide and SiC at the interfacial part between the base (I) and the coated layer to a composition of SiC at the surface part and a coefficient of thermal expansion of the whole material reduces approximately continuously from the base to the surface of the coated layer.
