PURPOSE: To obtain a coated web production having hard protective coating films of high strength of adhesion by evaporating nonreactive noble metal intermediate layers on a titanium web by electroless plating, then depositing hard external coatings of ceramics, etc., by evaporation thereon.
CONSTITUTION: The web consisting of Ti or Ti alloy is treated by using a polishing material, etc., by which the surface oxide is removed. At least one layer of the nonreactive noble metal intermediate layers are then deposited by evaporation on this web by the electroless plating technique. Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pa, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au and their alloys, etc., are used as the noble metal described above. The thickness of the intermediate layers is adequately about 0.5 to 15μ. The entire part is preferably heat treated to ≤525°C. Then, the hard external coatings which consist of ceramics, hard alloys, hard alloy compds., carbon, such as diamond, etc., and has Vickers hardness of at least 350 are deposited on the intermediate layers by evaporation. As a result, the coated web product provided with the hard external coatings having high adhesiveness is obtd.
