To obtain a compsn. having a stable applicability over a wide pH range by incorporating a specific water-soluble polymer which is obtd. by the (co)polymn. of a specific (meth)acrylamidoalkanesulfonic acid (salt) and has a specified wt. average mol.wt. as an essential ingredient into the same.
A water-soluble polymer which is prepd. by the (co)polymn. of 100-10 pts.wt. at least one compd. of the formula, 0-90 pts.wt. acrylamide, and 0-30 pts.wt. monomer copolymerizable therewith (e.g. acrylic acid) and has a wt. average mol.wt. of 1,000,000-4,000,000, pref. 1,2000,000-3,000,000, is incorporated as an essential ingredient, pref. in an amt. of 0.01-5 wt.%. In the formula R1 is H or CH3; R2 is a 1-5C alkylene; and X is H, Li, Na, K, or NH4. The resultant compsn. is useful as a paper coating material, an aq. emulsion coating material, an aq. adhesive, or an aq. emulsion pressure-sensitive adhesive.
