To coat a flexible web with a Japanese lacquer so as not to lose the flexibility of the web.

This method for coating a flexible web with a Japanese lacquer such as a black Japanese lacquer comprises diluting the Japanese lacquer with 140-250 wt.% of a volatile solvent (thinner or the like) and subsequently spraying the diluted Japanese lacquer on a flexible web 11 supported on a fixed or movable web support 12 by use of a movable or fixed air spray gun 13, thus coating the Japanese lacquer having a good luster on the flexible web 11 in a thin coating thickness not deteriorating the flexibility of the web.
