PURPOSE: To enable a device for detecting the position of a coil existing, with the axial direction directed in a fixed direction in an arbitrary position to correctly detect the coil position by moving a distance measuring means while the distance to the coil is measured and detecting the travel.

CONSTITUTION: In a coil position detecting device of a transfer-loading equipment for receiving a coil transported by a truck trailer or the like, there is provided a distance measuring means for measuring the distance to a coil. The distance measuring means is adapted to run freely in the direction intersecting perpendicularly to the axial direction of the coil by a moving means. According to a measurement signal detected by the distance measuring means, the axial position coordinate (axial this side end surface position) of the coil is calculated by an axial position coordinate calculating means. The travel of the distance measuring means by the moving means is detected by a travel detecting means, and according to the travel detection value and the distance measuring signal, the position coordinate (coil front end position and rear end position) intersecting perpendicularly to the axial direction of the coil is calculated by an orthogonal position coordinate calculating means.
