To provide a coin counting apparatus 11 which can prevent problems, such as mismatch of coin types, impossibility of storing coins, and scattering of coins.
A coin type reading means reads a coin type of the cassette 14 loaded into a cassette loading unit 54 and a shutter opening detecting means detects that a shutter 22 of the cassette 14 is opened. A chute position detecting means detects that a chute 76 which guides coins counted in a coin counting unit 33 to the cassette 14, is positioned at a cassette guiding position. In case the chute 76 is positioned at the cassette guiding position, if the coin type of the cassette 14 coincides with the coin type preset by the coin type setting unit 38 and coin count starting conditions including opening of the shutter 22 of the cassette 14 are satisfied, the apparatus permits the coin counting unit 33 to start counting coins.
