This coin depositing and dispensing machine 1 is provided with denomination-based storage boxes 5, and a multi-denomination storage box such as an overflow storage 8 for storing multiple denominations of coins. When counting the number of coins stored in the respective denomination-based storage boxes 5 and the multi-denomination storage box by denomination, the coin depositing and dispensing machine 1 stores all the coins stored in the multi-denomination storage box into the respective denomination-based storage boxes 5 by denomination, conveys the one-yen coin from the denomination-based storage box 5a to the multi-denomination storage box to be stored, stores the one-yen coins again in the denomination-based storage box 5a, and counts the number of the one-yen coins. After counting the one-yen coins, the coins of other denominations are sequentially conveyed from the denomination-based storage boxes 5 to the multi-denomination storage box to be stored, and the coins are stored again into the denomination-based storage boxes 5, to count the number of the coins of the denominations.
