PURPOSE: To obtain a color liq. crystal display device with high display contrast by using a liq. crystal composition prepared by adding a dichroic coloring matter to a liq. crystal compound having a smectic liq. crystal phase.
CONSTITUTION: A liq. crystal composition prepared by blending a liq. crystal compound having a smectic liq. crystal phase such as hexyloxybenzylidene-p- amino-2-methylbutyl cinnamate with about 1wt% dichroic coloring matter such as "D5 " of MERK Co. is used. The composition is sealed in a cell composed of one substrate having a transparent electrode for a heat generating resistor and the other substrate having a transparent electrode for voltage application to form a color liq. crystal display device. Each of the electrodes is covered with a transparent insulating film and a vertically orienting film. By supplying an electric current to the electrode for the resistor, heat is generated from the electrode to develop color, and the color is vanished by applying a voltage between both the electrodes.
