PURPOSE: To obtain a spinel-type sintered material colored with a red-, blue- or yellow-based color and having a high transparency by adding a prescribed amount of a metal oxide to a spinel-type powder having a specified purity and a specific surface area and hot-press sintering the resultant mixture.

CONSTITUTION: To (A) a spinel-type powder (purity: ≥99.9wt.%, BET specific surface are: ≥5m2/g), (B) 10-5000ppm metal oxide is added as a colorant component and the resultant mixture is then subjected to hot-press sintering at 1200-1600°C and ≥100kg/cm2, thus obtaining the objective colored transparent spinel-type sintered material. In the resultant sintered material, a sample of 2.0mm thickness having a mirror-finished surface shows ≥20% linear transparency (wavelength: 0.8μm).
