PURPOSE: To enable the reduction of the amount of NOx and the amount of HC due to vapor phase quench in flame.
CONSTITUTION: An ignition plug 10 is provided at a center of a combustion chamber 1. Auxiliary chambers 11, 12 having no ignition plug are provided at the symmetrical positions across the ignition plug 10, respectively, in an outer peripheral fringe section of the combustion chamber 1. Jet holes 11a, 12a of each auxiliary chamber 11, 12 are directed toward the ignition plug 10. Auxiliary flame K3 from the auxiliary chambers 11, 12 which are self-ignited collides hard against main flame K1 which is ignited by the ignition plug 10 to promote oxidation and reduction reactions by radical (activated chemical species) so that the amount of NOx and HC which are likely to occur in the vicinity of the ignition plug 10 is reduced. It is also possible to set the direction of the jet holes in such a way that a horizontal whirl or a vertical whirl is formed in the combustion chamber due to force of auxiliary flame. Furthermore, it is possible to control and change in such a way that a great quantity of auxiliary flame is jetted toward the ignition plug at the time of high load and toward a piston clevis at the time of low load.
