PURPOSE: To infer abnormality in an early stage and accurately by calculating the flame area which has a luminance that is higher than a set luminance level and comparing this area with a set area and judging that there is an instability or abnormality in combustion when there is a deviation more than specified and displaying the instability or abnormality in combustion.
CONSTITUTION: Data on flame pictures that is transmitted from a computer 9 from a picture memory device 8 is used for evaluating the state of combustion by means of a picture processing device 16. This device 16 counts the area of a luminance level that is higher than a set luminance level, and the value of the areas more than the set luminance level and the value of a set area are compared, and it is calculated whether or not their difference is in an allowable range. If there is a deviation beyond the allowable range, an instability or defect in combustion is judged. An abnormality diagnosing means 17 infers the content of the abnormality. This content is displayed on a display device 10 by an abnormal message producing means 18. And, the flame picture is mimically colored for respective ranges of luminance by a colored display device 19 for the flame luminance distribution and displayed on the display device 10.
