Abstract:
PURPOSE: To increase the encoding gain of a communications system using convolutional codes by economically installing a Viterbi decoding algorithm in the system at a high speed and utilizing a convolutional code having a longer constraint length. CONSTITUTION: In a communications system composed of, a channel 110, a modulator 107 and a demodulator 114 provided at both ends of the channel 110, a convolutional code encoder 104 which has a constraint length K and N=2K<-1> pieces of states, and is connected to the modulator 107, and responds to a data source 100, and a Viterbi decoder 117, the decoder 117 reads out continuous words from the decoder 114, calculates kernel metric increments of <=N/2 pieces of N/2 states only, selects a survival path for two new states by comparing cumulative metrics to each metric increment, and goes upstream from a zero state. It is possible to execute calculation of each companion group in parallel by decomposing the trellis diagram in a transition state into companion groups which are prime to each other.
