Abstract:

To provide a composite material which contains a titanium-aluminum intermetallic compound prepared by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis process and has not only superior heat resistance and wear resistance but also excellent toughness and also to provide its manufacturing method.

This composite material is characterized in that: metal titanium powder 5, ceramic powder 6 and molten aluminum 7 are subjected to self-propagating high-temperature synthetic reaction to form a composite layer 3 composed mainly of a titanium-aluminum intermetallic compound 2; and ceramic fiber 4 is dispersed in the composite layer.
