Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enable highly-precise measurement of the optical characteristics of an optical component by casting a light of an excitation light source on a rare-earth-doped fiber and by casting a natural emission light emitted from the fiber on a substance to be measured.
CONSTITUTION: When an emission light of an excitation light source l1 such as a semiconductor laser is cast on a rare-earth-doped fiber 2, the doped fiber 2 is excited by the emission light of the excitation light source 1 and emits a natural emission light of a gain wavelength band Δλ. When this emission light is cast on a substance 3 to be measured, an output corresponding to the optical characteristics of the substance 3 is obtairved and it is measured by a measurirvg unit 4. The doped fiber 2 is manufactured by adding a nre-earth element to a core material of an optical fiber and the nmatural emission light emitted is derived from the rare-earth element. Since the core part of the optical fiber itself emits a light, in other words, the light being larger than that from a white light source is taken out. Therefore the measuring unit 4 of a narrow dynamic range can also be used and, besides, execution of highly precise measurement is enabled.
