PURPOSE: To obtain an improved composition for a graft copolymer, useful for water-based coating materials by compounding a polymer which forms a main chain, a macromonomer having specified functional groups and an unsaturation-terminated oligomer.
CONSTITUTION: There is provided a composition for obtaining a graft copolymer having a molecular weight of 3,000-500,000, comprising (A) a polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer for forming the main chain of a graft polymer, (B) a macromonomer for bonding to the polymer chain through a single terminal, the macromonomer having a molecular weight of 500-30,000, being neutralized at least partially, being soluble or dispersible in an aqueous carrier, having a carboxylic acid or amino-functional group, and containing 10-100 wt.%, based on the weight of the macromonomer, polymerized α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and (C) an unsaturation-terminated oligomer having a substantially lower average molecular weight and a lower water solubility than component B. The amounts of components A to C are 2-98 wt.%, 98-2 wt.%, and 1-20 wt.%, respectively.
