To provide a novel composition for treating articular cartilage damage constituted of a readily available cell and a biocompatible polymer, considering that treating methods of articular cartilage damage developed heretofore require a process for extracting bone marrow and have many problems from the viewpoints of operation processes and effects.
The composition for treating articular cartilage damage is constituted of a cell ingredient, which is isolated, proliferated or differentiated from umbilical cord blood, and a nutrient medium therefor. The cell ingredient is preferably at least one cell ingredient selected from among mesenchymal stem cell isolated from umbilical cord blood, a precursor cell which is derived from the mesenchymal stem cell and can be differentiated into a chondrocyte or an osteocyte, and a chondrocyte or an osteocyte differentiated from the mesenchymal stem cell. The biocompatible polymer is preferably at least one selected from among fibrin, gelatin, collagen, hyaluronic acid, polyphosphazine, polyacrylate, polyglactic acid, polyglycolic acid, pluronic acid, and alginic acid and a salt thereof.
