The subject of the invention is an etherpyrrolidone carboxylic acid of the formula (1) in which R1 is a C1-C6 hydrocarbon group with 1-4 oxy groups R2 is H, CH3, CH2CH3 (A-O) is a (poly)alkylene glycol unit containing one or more C2-C4 alkoxy groups or a mixture of plural C2-C4 alkoxy groups, at least one alkoxy group being a butoxy or propoxy group M is hydrogen, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or an ammonium group y is 1 or 2 x is 1, 2, 3 or 4.
