PURPOSE: To form an optical distributor which does not attenuate largely even with light of a higher mode by welding merely one end of plural optical fibers for transmission at the side faces without tapering the same to form a large- diameter cylindrical welded pat and combining the same with an optical fiber for transmission having the outside diameter conforming to the diameter of said part.
CONSTITUTION: The large-diameter welded part 4 is formed to one end of optical fibers 10 and 10'. The pat 4 is formed by arraying the terminals of the fibers 10 and 10' in parallel and heating and welding the side faces. The section thereof is made circular by the surface tension during melting of the optical fibers. The part 4 is formed by welding merely the side faces without tapering the fibers. The end face of the large-diameter optical fiber 8 faces the end face of the apt 4. The end faces are inserted and fixed into ferrules 6 and 6', then the core 5 of the pat 4 and the core 8a of the fiber 8 are easily axially aligned without the tapering operation and the optical distributor is thus constituted.
