PURPOSE: To prevent the damage to be given on the surface of the cornea at the time of wearing by making the outer peripheral part of the contact lens surface more hydrophilic than in the central part.
CONSTITUTION: The front surface of the base material for the contact lens consisting of a copolymer of γ-methacryloxypropyl-trissilane, etc., is masked and is then subjected to a glow discharge treatment exclusive of the circumferential edge parts on both surfaces of the base material. An aq. monomer soln. is added to the base material for the lens subjected to the discharge treatment and thereafter, cerium diammonium nitrate is added thereto to effect a surface graft reaction. A homopolymer sticking to the surface is removed after end of the reaction. The polacrylamide which is the hydrophilic homopolymer is grafted only in the circumferential edge part, i.e., the part which is not covered with the mask at the time of the discharge treatment and the hydrophilicity is imparted thereto. The damage to be given on the cornea is much smaller with this constitution than the conventional contact lenses.
