To improve cargo handling efficiency in container terminals.
This container terminal comprises multistory container cabinets provided with container shelves 2 in stages and in lines and arranged in pairs of two lines defining a container movement passage in between, automatic stacking cranes 3 for storing containers 13 on the container shelves 2 while moving along the passages, a sea-side traverser rail 15 (15a, 15b) laid to connect the sea-side face and interior of the cabinets, a land-side traverser rail 16 arranged to connect the land-side face and interior of the cabinets, and traversers 4 (4a to 4e) movable on the rails 15 and 16 while carrying the containers 13. The container movement passages extend in lines between the sea-side and land-side cabinets. That portion of the sea-side and land-side tranverse rails 15 and 16 which lies inside each cabinet is perpendicular to the passage. The sea-side travereser rail 15 is for both upper and lower portions of each cabinet, and the land-side traverser rail 16 is for the lower portion of each cabinet.
