Abstract:

PURPOSE: To continuously manufacture SiC without causing the internal clogging of a furnace due to by-produced SiO by blending pellets formed from an SiO2- contg. starting material and carbon powder with a granular carbon material having a large surface area and by heating the blend.

CONSTITUTION: powder of an SiO2-contg. starting material such as silica, carbon to be internally charged such as coal powder and an optionally added binder such as startch are granulated to form pellets having about 2W10mm size. The amount of the carbon is about 3mol as C per 1mol SiO2. Activated carbon or the like having ≥about 100m2/g surface area is desireably used as carbon to be externally charged, that is, a granular carbok material to be placed among the pellets, and the suitable grain size is about 6W15mm. To the pellets is added the carbon to be externally charged by about 0.1W1.5mol as C per 1mol SiO2, and they are indirectly heated to about 1,700W1,900°C in a vertical furnace and reacted to continuously manufacture an SiC type substance. SiO escaping from the pellets by the heating is adsorbed on the externally charged and fixed as SiC.
