Abstract:
To provide a method for producing ethylene glycol from a carbohydrate affording aldohexose.SOLUTION: Disclosed is a highly selective continuous process for converting aldohexose in a feed material including a carbohydrate affording aldohexose to ethylene glycol. The related process includes the steps of: making a feed material including a carbohydrate pass through a reaction zone having an aqueous hydrogenation medium which includes a reverse aldol catalyst, hydrogen and hydrogenation catalyst continuously or intermittently; and providing a product material solution including ethylene glycol by maintaining that hydrogenation medium under the hydrogenation conditions in the reaction zone. The hydrogenation conditions include a temperature in a range from about 230°C to 300°C, a ratio of the reverse aldol catalyst to the hydrogenation catalyst and a hydrogen partial pressure. By combining those conditions, the mass ratio of ethylene glycol to the hexitol prepared by hydrogenation of hexose larger than about 10:1 in a product material solution can be obtained.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
