PURPOSE: To prevent agglomeration of monomer particles and thereby to carry out a continuous suspension polymerization effectively, by carrying out the suspension polymerization in a centrifugal suspension polymerization apparatus, whereby a centrifugal force is exerted to the suspension to form a liquid layer consisting of the suspension and a nonsolvent therefor and the mixture is transferred.
CONSTITUTION: As a polymerization apparatus, there is used a centrifugal suspension polymerization apparatus having a rotatable frustoconical inner cylinder 13. Then, monomer particles are suspended in a nonsolvent therefor. A polymerization initiator is added to the suspension and heated. The resulting suspension is continuously supplied from a material supply nozzle 20 of the apparatus to the rear inside on the side of the smaller diameter of the frustoconical inner cylinder 13. Then, a centrifugal force resulting from rotation of the inner cylinder 13 is exerted to the suspension to form a liquid layer consisting of the suspension and the nonsolvent. This liquid layer is suspension-polymerized while it is transferred in the longitudinal direction of the inner cylinder 13 by a combined action of rotation of the inner cylinder 13 and a piston flow resulting from the difference in diameter of the cylinder along its longitudinal direction.
