Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further reduce a discharge amount of harmful substances which are produced in an internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: An output signal of an air-fuel ratio sensor 43 at an upstream side of a catalyst 41 is compared with an upstream-side target value corresponding to a target air-fuel ratio at the upstream side of the catalyst, it is determined whether or not an air-fuel ratio at an upstream side of a current catalyst is leaner or richer than the target air-fuel ratio according to a magnitude relationship of the compared values, a correction amount is changed so as to gradually increase a fuel injection amount during the air-fuel ratio is determined to be lean, and on the other hand, during the air-fuel ratio is determined to be rich, the correction amount is changed so as to gradually reduce the fuel injection amount. Also, the upstream-side target value which is to be compared with the output signal of the air-fuel ratio sensor at the upstream side of the catalyst is changed on the basis of an output signal of an air-fuel ratio sensor 44 at a downstream side of the catalyst.
