The control device includes an inclination sensor for detecting an angle of inclination in a fore-and-aft direction of a vehicle, a vehicle speed sensor for detecting a speed of the vehicle, a shift position sensor for detecting a shift range position, and an ECU. When the shift range position detected by the shift position sensor is at a forward gear position other than the first gear (ST1: NO), the angle of inclination of the vehicle detected by the inclination sensor is greater than 0° (ST2: YES), and a retreat speed of the vehicle detected by the vehicle speed sensor is greater than 0 km/h (ST3: YES), the ECU causes the engine to stall (ST4).
